This past summer, I went with 10 other girls and 2 of the guidance counselors from my high school on a service immersion trip to Kissimee Florida to volunteer at Give Kids the World Village. Give Kids the World, is a non-profit resort where children with life-threatening illnesses and their families can come to stay and visit the different theme parks or attractions that are in central Florida. When we arrived at the village, the volunteers were so welcoming and very friendly. We then went on a tour to see the different venues that the village has available for the families to enjoy during their stay. After our tour, we went to sign in and to begin our first day. The job that I had for the first day was working in the Castle of Miracles. This is a place in the village where the Wish child comes to make their star, which is then put up by in the Star Fairy at night. Creating this gold star is a very special moment for the child and their family because, the child gets to write their name or draw anything they want to make it their own personal star. The families can then come back to the Castle, and volunteers are able to locate where the Child's star was placed by simply looking up the child's name. I also got to do many other fun jobs that included driving a little train around the village, operating a carousel, working at a Pirate/ Princess Party and a talent show.
Volunteering at Give Kids the World was one of the best volunteer opportunities that I have ever had. The families I got to meet at the village were so nice and very appreciative of all the work that I was doing to make them have the best experience ever. And I was able to do this by talking with them and by constantly smiling to show that I was having fun volunteering at this wonderful place. I am so glad that I applied to be a part of the group that went on this amazing and life changing service immersion trip. I really hope that I can go back and volunteer at Give Kids the World Village some day in the future.
